Toto’s Italian Fine dine

Walton Street, Knightsbridge, London

The restaurant is designed as a confluence of the old and unapologetic new. Occupying a historic London building, the space doesn’t pretend the contrast isn’t there but in fact it leans into it. The original structure remains untouched: carved wood fireplace mantels, arched brick facades and tall leaded windows.

The main dining room holds its drama at the ceiling height. A double-height space with an original ornate fireplace becomes backdrop for custom lighting that drops through the volume, cylindrical fixtures with brass rods extending both up and down. White tablecloths ground the formal ambience while black leather dining chairs with walnut frames keep things from feeling too constrained. The bar area commits fully to moody luxury too as its overhead canopy appears to float. Bar stools in charcoal leather with brass footrests line the counter clad in book-matched dark stone. The mezzanine level wraps around the main dining space, its perforated brass screen allowing views down while maintaining intimacy for diners above.

Throughout, the design respects heritage without being precious about it; the contemporary interventions are bold, materials used are luxurious, and lighting is theatrical. A restaurant is after all designed to make moments into occasions, not casual meals.
